Sure! But you might be able to figure this out on your own.
1. On the side of your computer (you have a laptop, right?), find a socket or hole (the tech guys
call it a USB port) that the flash drive fits into.
2. When you plug it in, there should be a moment while your computer figures out that it's there. 3. Then you should either have an icon (picture) on your screen that has the name of the flash
drive on it, or you should go to "My Computer" and find it under the heading "Removable
Storage Devices." (It probably doesn't say exactly that, but it should be close.)
4. Find the computer files that you want to bring to school -- your portfolio paragraphs. Click
and drag them into the icon for the flash drive.
5. NOW is tricky, because this is not how it works on my computer. YOU CAN NOT JUST PULL
THE FLASH DRIVE OUT. You have to tell the computer that you are going to, first. I *think*
you can do this by dragging the flash drive icon to the recycling bin--but I'm NOT SURE.
6. On my school computer, at the lower right corner of the screen, there are many tiny pictures
that have to do with different programs that the computer is running right then. The flash
drive should have a picture there. If it does, RIGHT-click on it. That should give you a line
asking whether to remove the storage device. LEFT-click on that. Then it should be safe to
   remove the drive.

Good luck! If you don't feel like risking it, we'll work it out on Monday.

I tend to be fussy about electronics, because I used to try to save money on CD players and things like that. Every time I bought a brand-name I didn't know, the machine stopped working in 1-2 months.

Ask the salesperson which flash drive he or she thinks is the best. And don't let them talk you into buying one that has lots and lots of memory, unless you plan to use it to back up most or all of your computer files. I have a 4-GB flash drive made by PNY. I had never heard of the company before, but the guy I talked to at Circuit City recommended it. Now, with 4 GB, I have everything on my computer hard-drive stored on the flash drive, too. I can't put my applications and my music collection on it; but everything else fits.

4 GB is a _lot_ of memory. If you just want a flash drive to use to take a few writing projects from home to school and back, 1 GB will be more than enough memory. But most computer tech-geeks really recommend that you back up your files; that is, make copies of those files somewhere not on the computer. That way, if you drop the computer or something, at least you still have the work, and if you get a new computer, you can plug in the flash drive and put everything back on the new computer.

It's like making a photocopy of everything on your computer.

If you want to do that, then I would recommend that you get a flash drive with at least 2 GB of memory. And you might want to get a case for it. The cases usually have clips, so that you can hook them onto things. My flash drive is hooked onto the power cord for my computer.

It's called a Flash Drive, or sometimes a Memory Stick. You can get them at Frye's Electronics (I may have spelled that wrongly), Circuit City, or Best Buy. Make sure that you tell the salesman that you want it for use with a computer; there are different memory cards for digital cameras, and you don't want to buy the wrong thing.

Hey, kiddo. My computer isn't going to grow legs and walk over to me and wake me up. You can write comments to me at whatever time you want, until your parents yell at you.
