Friday… Yes, it’s Friday.
BEHAVIOR NOTE: Today was all in all a fairly good day, but folks, you STILL need to work on fewer interruptions and distractions. I will distract myself quite enough without the tapping, calling out, side conversations, etc. We’re burning daylight, here, and I only have so much time to try to make you smarter. Let’s quit wasting it!
ABSENCE NOTE: Remember that the first strength and evidence (or the “first reason that middle school is better than elementary school”, and evidence) was due today. Lateness = 30% off. So if you weren’t here today, be sure that you have those 2 paragraphs to turn in on Monday.
FRIDAY, 2/29: STOPPING POINTS / DUE WORK

students asked many questions I didn’t have answers for.
(Look for links to related websites at the bottom of this post.)

sentence about each group or “caste,” telling why you put
them at the level you did.

So that was it for today. No notes to post today, I will post them on Monday when we get further on in History. And as promised, here are some links about the Indian caste system. Also, some historical links about the CA Gold Rush for my AM Core, and a few links to sites about Aesop & his fables.
Happy weekend!

The Indian caste system describes the social stratification and social restrictions in the Indian subcontinent, in which social classes are defined by thousands of endogamous hereditary groups, often termed as jātis or castes. Within a jāti, there existexogamous groups known as gotras, the lineage or clan of a person, although in a handful of sub-castes like Shakadvipi, endogamy within a gotra is permitted and alternative mechanisms of restricting endogamy are used (e.g. banning endogamy within a surname). Although generally identified with Hinduism, the caste system was also observed among followers of other religions in the Indian subcontinent, including some groups of Muslims and Christians.[1] The Indian Constitution has outlawed caste-based discrimination, in keeping with the socialist, secular, democratic principles that founded the nation.[2]. Caste barriers have mostly broken down in large cities,[3] though they persist in rural areas of the country. The caste system, in various forms, does continue to play a major role in Indian society and politics.[4][5] There’s a lot more to the Wikipedia article, if you are interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_caste_system I found another site that had interesting comments about how the caste system is working now, in the 21st century in India: http://www.lotussculpture.com/bronze_sculpture_caste.htm

It’s called a Flash Drive, or sometimes a Memory Stick. You can get them at Frye’s Electronics (I may have spelled that wrongly), Circuit City, or Best Buy. Make sure that you tell the salesman that you want it for use with a computer; there are different memory cards for digital cameras, and you don’t want to buy the wrong thing.

Oh . i know . i have one for my camera . Ugh . i dislike my camera . its sony . :] . but ;l . and like . which one do you think i should buy it at . do you think costco brands are common ? or what about walmart ?

I tend to be fussy about electronics, because I used to try to save money on CD players and things like that. Every time I bought a brand-name I didn’t know, the machine stopped working in 1-2 months.
Ask the salesperson which flash drive he or she thinks is the best. And don’t let them talk you into buying one that has lots and lots of memory, unless you plan to use it to back up most or all of your computer files. I have a 4-GB flash drive made by PNY. I had never heard of the company before, but the guy I talked to at Circuit City recommended it. Now, with 4 GB, I have everything on my computer hard-drive stored on the flash drive, too. I can’t put my applications and my music collection on it; but everything else fits.
4 GB is a _lot_ of memory. If you just want a flash drive to use to take a few writing projects from home to school and back, 1 GB will be more than enough memory. But most computer tech-geeks really recommend that you back up your files; that is, make copies of those files somewhere not on the computer. That way, if you drop the computer or something, at least you still have the work, and if you get a new computer, you can plug in the flash drive and put everything back on the new computer.
It’s like making a photocopy of everything on your computer.
If you want to do that, then I would recommend that you get a flash drive with at least 2 GB of memory. And you might want to get a case for it. The cases usually have clips, so that you can hook them onto things. My flash drive is hooked onto the power cord for my computer.

I have it just TODAY :] but l have no idea how to use it . So i’m going to go to school on monday and maybe you can help me ?
March 2, 2008 at 6:49 am
Sure! But you might be able to figure this out on your own.
1. On the side of your computer (you have a laptop, right?), find a socket or hole (the tech guys
call it a USB port) that the flash drive fits into.
2. When you plug it in, there should be a moment while your computer figures out that it’s there. 3. Then you should either have an icon (picture) on your screen that has the name of the flash
drive on it, or you should go to “My Computer” and find it under the heading “Removable
Storage Devices.” (It probably doesn’t say exactly that, but it should be close.)
4. Find the computer files that you want to bring to school — your portfolio paragraphs. Click
and drag them into the icon for the flash drive.
5. NOW is tricky, because this is not how it works on my computer. YOU CAN NOT JUST PULL
THE FLASH DRIVE OUT. You have to tell the computer that you are going to, first. I *think*
you can do this by dragging the flash drive icon to the recycling bin–but I’m NOT SURE.
6. On my school computer, at the lower right corner of the screen, there are many tiny pictures
that have to do with different programs that the computer is running right then. The flash
drive should have a picture there. If it does, RIGHT-click on it. That should give you a line
asking whether to remove the storage device. LEFT-click on that. Then it should be safe to
remove the drive.
Good luck! If you don’t feel like risking it, we’ll work it out on Monday.

Karen, remember that my computer works completely differently. We’ll work on this on Monday–right after school.
