Well, this is awkward….Hi. If you’re here, and you’re NOT one of my students, I’d love to find out what brought you here. If you’re here and you ARE one of my students, shouldn’t you be working on your Portfolio? In any event, welcome. My name is Joshua Summit (unless you’re one of my students, in which case I’m still MR. Summit, and I mean it), and I teach middle school E.S.L. or E.L.D. I’ve been teaching for a year and a half, now, in Alameda, CA; for the 8 years prior, I taught ESL in Sacramento. This is something new for me–an experiment. I will be using this site to post homework assignments, classwork, quite possibly random links to news stories and websites that seem interesting.I don’t know how well I’ll keep this updated, but I will try. It’s a work in progress. Be patient, please. And welcome.

Mr.summit,
For the profolio, do I compare the progress report I have in elementary school and in middle school? Do I have to bring it to school, when?

Hi, Katherine.
Yes, you should compare them if you are using them as evidence that you are doing better in your classes. You can bring them in whenever you like, and I can give you a page protector to put them in.
Later on, I will recommend that you all get a small (1-inch or 1.5-inch) binder for your portfolio. You might want to do that soon, to have a place to put your evidence and such.

You are NOT stupid, Karen.
However, you’ve GOT to stop playing with the capital letters; just looking at that makes my head hurt!
Tell you what: we’re going to treat this blog like it’s a part of my classroom, and that writing things here is like writing things for my class. I want you to try to follow basic rules for capital letters, sentences, and punctuation. Nothing fancy, but easy to read, and practicing good writing habits. Plus, if you try to spell and write correctly (yes, including the capital and small letters), then you can use the spell-check to find spelling mistakes. It won’t catch everything, but it’ll help some. That should make it easier for you to write.
I’ll send you your English / Language Arts and your History grade to your email address. But it’ll probably be different on Monday; I’m pushing to get caught up on grading this weekend, and will have progress reports on Monday. Along with a test on “Ginger for the Heart,” so make sure you know where your notes are!

Ok . i’m sorry . and ok . you can send it to my email . but i hate it . i have 2678 mail that i never read yet . and i need to answer all of them . they make me stress . and some of them or from my math teacher . and some of them are from my tutor . rawr . so ok . you can . but i’m just warning you . i won’t see it in a while though . MKay ? and ok . it can be just like your classroom . and sorry again for making your head hurt . :[

’s okay, Karen. Not to worry.
Now, let’s get your email under control. Question: of those 2678 messages, how many do you *need* to read? Let’s say that messages from friends don’t count, unless they are since Monday. Does that make sense?
So, go into the mailbox and delete anything from friends that you got before Monday. Now, if you got and read a message, and it’s special to you, obviously don’t delete it. And if it’s an email from that cute guy in science class and you *want* to read it, obviously you keep that, too. Just get rid of messages that you really don’t want to read. Don’t open them to make sure, just get rid of them. And get rid of the ones that you _have_ read, that aren’t important.
Then get rid of messages that are obviously spam. Messages that are trying to sell you something, for example. Often you can read the first line of an email without even opening it; some email programs show you the first line. So: get rid of all those messages.
And get rid of anything that comes from an email address you don’t know. If you look at the email address and ask, Who’s that? The answer is probably that you don’t know them. Get rid of those messages.
Then don’t forget to tell your computer to empty the trash.
Once you’ve done all that, you should have many many MANY fewer emails. Start reading the ones that are important (from tutors, teachers, and cute boys) first. Try to read 30 a day until you are done with them all. When you get *new* messages, read them FIRST. Then go back to reading and deleting old emails.
Deep breaths, Karen. This is just like any other problem: First you break the big job into lots of little jobs, then you pick one little job and do it. When it’s done, feel good about yourself for doing it, then pick another to do.

Ok . And NiTe . i’m out . i’m going to bed Mr. Summit . :] . byee . and ok . but like Mr. Peters sends me emails too . I want to know how i’m doing in math . ++ . so bye ; Mr . Summit and on the pofolio do i photocopy something ? i don’t know how to photocopy and i don’t have one at home .

? I don’t know what you want to photocopy. Are you talking about the notes from last year and this year, to show how much more you’re learning?
Bring them into class and I will photocopy them for you. My printer is also a scanner and copier.
Good night, Karen.

Hi, Ed.
Go to my entry titled “Daily Update 2/28.” Do you see those two blue lines? Those are links to the pages of history notes that I’ve scanned. I didn’t scan Friday’s notes because we haven’t finished the page yet.
Next week I’ll probably try to scan the academic vocabulary sheets that I’ll give out. And the Unit Organizer, once we work a bit more with it.
I’m hoping to put just about *everything* except tests up. And probably not the whole portfolio packet.
But I *could* scan in the planning sheets for each set of paragraphs as we work on them… hm.
Might be cool.
Hope that helps! Have a good weekend.
Mr. S.

Karen,
No insults in my classroom. Right? And when you’re writing in this blog, you’re back in my classroom. So no more. Not even as a joke. I don’t want this to become a place where people think its okay to be rude. Thank you.
